Understanding IVF: Key Information
What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology where eggs are retrieved from ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus. IVF is used to treat various fertility issues and help individuals and couples achieve pregnancy.
Typical IVF Timeline
- Weeks 1-2: Ovarian suppression (birth control pills or Lupron)
- Days 1-3: Baseline ultrasound and bloodwork
- Days 4-12: Ovarian stimulation with daily injections
- Days 10-14: Monitoring appointments every 1-2 days
- Day 14-16: Trigger shot when follicles are ready
- Day 16-18: Egg retrieval (36 hours after trigger)
- Days 16-21: Fertilization and embryo development
- Day 21 or 23: Fresh embryo transfer (Day 3 or 5)
- Day 30-32: Beta HCG pregnancy test
Important Factors Affecting IVF Success
- Age (particularly maternal age)
- Ovarian reserve (AMH, FSH levels)
